... the fan holds a unique place in the history of art as a masterpiece requiring the creativity of the artist and the skills of the craftsman.

This versatile object managed to adapt to royal courts' etiquette as well as to the most imperious of all fashion diktats, thus becoming alternatively a refined and fragile sceptre endowing power and social recognition, and a mere accessory showing off flashy novelties, unbridled imagination, or sober fanciness. 

Nowadays, beyond its sheer use as a cooling device, the fan remains a vibrant object, synonymous with elegance and mainly used to outline a silhouette or to bring out originality.
